Is it safe to travel in Phuket now?

Is it safe to travel in Phuket in April (next month)? A dear friend is planning on a vacation there soon (flying from Malaysia to Phuket). I'm just very concerned about the unrest in Bangkok and in the other southern Muslim-populated districts there.

Thanks!

There is no reason to be concerned. The unrest is in the southern 3 provinces of which Phuket is NOT part. there is no unrest in Bangkok just a heightened state of security. For all intent and purpose, it is business as usual here in Thailand.

Has it ever been unsafe? What unrest in Bangkok?

Please keep in mind that just because there is ONE bad event happened in ONE city does not mean the whole country is unsafe. Just about everywhere in the world has something happening but people still travel, don't they?

Anyway - even the trouble down south is more centred around three provinces and it has nothing to do with the current world terrorism situation.

Go and have a great time. You'll love it!

Phuket is not affected in any way by the happenings in Bangkok or South Thailand. You will be fine.

Happy holiday.

i didn't know it wasn't safe in Phuket. you should worry more about your friend being in Malaysia. Don't worry about the muslims in Phuket they want your money not your life.

There is no problem here really. Phuket is running at almost full occupancy for the last few months and there has been no problems. The unrest in the south is in the southernmost provinces near the border of Malaysia. It is not even near to Phuket as Phuket doesn't share a border with any of these provinces.

I just came back from Bangkok and there is really no problem there. THere are just more security checks than usual but that is a good thing as well. Phuket is so far away from Bangkok it is almost not bothered by the happenings in Phuket.

I hope your friend has a good time in Phuket. 13 April is the THai New Year (Songkran Festival) so it'll be a great time in Phuket where everyone is splashing cool water at each other for fun as part of the traditions. It's like a grand scale water-fight.

Odds are they will be safe. Statistically, they are more likely to die driving to the airport than being involved in any terrorist incident.
