Is it dangerous to take a bus from Surat Thaini Thailand to Phuket Thailand?

I'm planning a trip to thsilsnd for my 30th birthday. i was thinking i would take a train from bangkok to phuket then found out that the train oly goes as far as surat thaini and i would have to take a bus the rest of the way. i know i should probably travel light and watch my luggage and all that but other than that could it be dangerous?

It is very safe, Thais travel from Suratani to Phuket by bus everyday, there is also a minibus service that is faster but probably not as comfortable.

If you plan on taking the train and transfer by bus from Surat to Phuket, you are better off just taking the bus from Bangkok directly to Phuket and avoid the transfer. Go to the New Southern Bus Terminal, and grab a VIP 30 bus by The Transport Co. for 970 thb.

It is operated by the Thai Government and is very safe a reliable. The total time is about 12 hrs, with a 20 min break in Prachrup that includes free dinner. It is very reliable and safe,I have used it at least 40 times, and have kept my laptop top on the bottom everytime with no problems.

Only downside is that the Bus Station is on the outskirts of the city, the easiest and fastest way to get there is by taxi, unless you know the bus system.

You by the ticket from any Thai Ticket Major outlet, they have ones at every Major Cineplex and at Esplanade on the 6th floor. Avoid the company's at Khaosan Road, they will rip you off and they will take twice as long.

Can I ask why not just take the bus from Bangkok to Phuket. It would most likely be cheaper. I take the bus from the Southern Bus station to Ranong which is about 300 km north of Phuket a number of times and have had no problems. It cost me about 700 baht for a one way ticket on a 24 passenger VIP bus. Phuket would be abut 900 to 1,000 baht. 24 passenger VIP bus is more conformable with bigger seats. A 32 passenger bus would be cheaper.

p.s. Hai Yai is not closer to Phuket then Surat Thani is.

Hi!

Definitely, first option is by plane from Bangkok to Phuket (see Thai airlines or Airasia), second option is by bus directly from Bangkok to Phuket.

In case you want to see Surat Thani or other sights from the west coast, yes, you can take a bus from Surat Thani to Phuket, but if not, I would go straight to Phuket by plane.

Enjoy!

You can take a bus straight to Phuket using the government buses http://www.thai-blogs.com/index.php/2008/04/24/how-to-travel-by-bus-in-thailand-3?blog=27

Don't take tourist buses they can be a scam.

Always book VIP or First Class tickets. Meal is usually included in this (however the meal isn't particularly substantial so take snacks).

Why don't you take airplane from BKK to Phuket... nice and easy.... don't need to spend time in the train or bus for long time (believe me it is not fun and comfortable)....

there are trains that go to hadyai from bangkok and then take a bus to phuket. it is nearer and safer.

south thailand is a bit volatile these days and you dont want to be caught in the bombing event. travel light would be good too.

Should be alright. Taking the bus as the locals do with the public bus service is quite safe.
