koh samui the beachs are beautiful there and accomidations are fairly cheap try charlies huts their right on the beach in the center of all the action but you can also have your own little hide out there in your own beach hut I love it there and go back atleast once a year. I would suggest a book called letsgo.ca it will help you out with all the info you want.smaller islands are at your figure tip there where scuba diving and snorkeling are world class, try swimming with whale sharks its an experience that you'll never forget!!!!!! If you need any more info email me I 'd love to help you as much as can!!!
Hua Hin
If you like nice quiet beach, I suggest you to go to Koh Samed, Koh Samui or Koh Chang. Koh Samui is a little more expensive than the other two.

Hua Hin or Cha Am. These are the beaches that locals go to. Not so crowded with western tourists. Another place is Koh Chang which is an island not too far away from Bangkok. Please do the online searches on these places before you go. As a Thai, I would recommend Hua Hin and Cha Am, my husband (a German-American) loves both beaches, it's less crownded than Phuket and less expensive to stay and enjoy less expensive seafood there.
I think Hua Hin is great. Pattaya is also very "active".
Hua Hin 170 km south of Bkk
Koh Samed 180 km east of Bkk
Koh Chang 260 km east of bkk
Prajuab, or Pranburi 60 - 100+ km from Hua Hin
Krabi, Phi Phi close to Phuket
Samui in the gulf of thailand
lot lot more.. but above may make u busy enough now.
Check out Krabi. It is very close to Phuket and the beaches are much better. I payed 800 baht in Au Nang during high season. If you are really strapped for cash you may want to stay in Krabi town. You will have to take the longboats onto Railey beach everyday.
You can also go to Phuket and stay at one of the less popular beaches where the prices are not as high. One of reasons why Phuket is so expensive is that many people either book online or get roped into a taxi scam. The taxi drivers use scare tactics and make you think all the hotels are full then they drive you to a 2000 baht a night place and get their cut of the deal. After being roped into a scam like that just walk down the street and you'll finf places for 500-600 baht. I payed 500 baht at the Toto house on Karon beach.
Kho Samui is also a good place. Don't book your hotel from the airport. They'll rip you off.
