How much is it to buy a mobile phone in phuket?

When i am in phuket is it better to buy a cheap mobile phone to ring back to ausie.

If you have an unlocked gsm phone you can just buy a sim card in Phuket that will work on either the 900 or 1800 MHz frequencies used in Thailand and Australia. You can just swap out the Aussie sim card and install an inexpensive Thai sim card and you'll be ready to go, you will lose any features that are exclusive to your Aussie sim card, but when you re-install the Australian sim card when you return home, you'll retain all the features. If your phone is locked, you can most likely have it unlocked for a few hundred baht or so. I'm not sure about Phuket, but if it's anything like here in Bangkok, there will be very cheap used phones for sale, maybe around one thousand baht, if you want to go that route. There are also internet shops that offer very inexpensive overseas calls if you don't want to buy a phone or a sim card as well. Good luck.

You have 2 options( don't even thin about using your ozzie phone!)

You can either buy a Thai sim card which will cost you about 18 usd, or do what I did and buy a nokia entry level phone( no camera or gimmicks) but comes with simm card and a little bit of credit for around $40.US

Heres the good bit. If you put 9 in between the country code and the number you are calling you get Thai rates. In the uk all numbers start with the number 0, and you have to drop that For example if you were calling 07767777777 from thailand you would call 0044977677777 It costs me less than half as much to call my girlfriend in england from Thailand than it does when I call her from here.

One word of advice though. On the very cheapest options, the sim will be de-activated if it is not topped up in a 3 month period. For a few dollars more your phone will work next time... and for most people who visit Thailand there will be as next time.

Have a good trip
