Can anyone recommend a hotel in Phuket?

We're 3 students, looking to pay max â‚¬30 a night each, preferably only around â‚¬20 a night each.... We're looking for somewhere close to the beach, and also with good nightlife. We're arriving in early August... Any suggestions? We're Irish.

If you want to stay close to the nightlife, You'll probably want to stay on Patong Beach. That's the main tourist beach on the island of Phuket. It does have the dirtiest water of all the beaches on the island though.

You can find information and make a booking at practically every hotel on Phuket.

If you want to stay at a nicer beach, go to Kata or Karon. There will be shops and restaurants close by but you'll have to take a tuk-tuk into Patong for the nightlife.

You need to look for somewhere near to Patong Beach. That is where all the nightlife is as well as cheaper hotels.

Please be careful, though, when choosing a hotel. There are some dodgy ones there. Book through a reputable agency - there are plenty on the internet if you look properly. Check them out at tripadvisor.com or a similar website.

Patong beach and Karon beach suit you if you want to enjoy night life, there are lot of hotels for your budget

If you go to Patonhog check out some hotels near Sainamyen school. There are about 4-5 hotels priced at 500 thb/nght, thats about a 5 min walk to the beach, there some bars in the area you also walk to Sutoi Bangla about 10 mins away.

I found of all the places I have been to in Thailand I least enjoyed Phuket as I found it overpriced and over rated. Stayed in Patong.

Ao Nang in Krabi is a far prettier place and easy acces to the Islands like PHI PHi and is far cheaper

Its sound like you want to do a lot so for 2 of you I would budget 5000Bht a day which is roughly 90 GBP.

Hotels are expensive in Phuket but you should be able to get something for 12 - 15 GPB a night.

After a 2 weeks in Phuket you will want to travel somewhere else so please check Ao Nang - you will not be disappointed

If you like Thai food then eat with the locals and you will save a fortune.

You can spend as little as 2 GBP but budget for 6GBP each a day.

1 pound is about 54 - 60 bahts. Food costs about 50 baht and hotel about 1,000 - 3,000 baht.

i will be arriving in phuket at about 7.30 at night and i want to go straight to khao lak its about 2 hrs north of phuket

The cheapest way will always be by bus. Khao Lak is about 74 km north of Phuket. The best way is to arrange with your hotel/resort to pick you up at the airport or take a taxi from the airport to Khao Lak. A taxi from Phuket airport to Khao Lak costs between 1100 and 1600 baht. If you think this is too much and prefer to take a bus, you will have to get to the main road about 3 kilometers from the airport. Hop on a bus headed towards Takua Pa, Ranong or Surat Thani, they all stop in Khao Lak.

I will be travelling to Phuket in June for 7 days, and was wondering what to do there. I would like to go bunjee jumping, elephant trekking, atv-ing as well as go-karting, but I've noticed that all those companies that I can find on the internet are EXPENSIVE! Is there anyone who can recommend a good, and cheap place?

Also, how much should an average meal cost there? Because I've noticed large price differences between different restaurants. I've also noticed that it costs alot more than a meal would cost in Bangkok. Is this normal? Or am I looking up all the wrong places?

I'll recommend you do what I did when I was in Phuket.. The Thais there like to overcharge foreigners.. so don't buy stuff in popular tourist destinations. The seafood is priced reasonably in certain places.. check the menu before enterinng. Go for less classy places, the food is cheap and good.

Go rent a car and make use of the maps provided free at your hotel. Toyota vios or a honda city would cost you about USD 15 a day (minus the fuel). Phuket is a small island, so you can explore the whole island in a day or two in the car. Also, you can visit places most tourist can't.. like when I visited the local Thai night maret.

For tours that takes you were the cars can't go, go look for the local tour agencies.. The smaller ones allow you to bargain.. start with 60% discount.. then go from there. Whether you book from big or small tour agencies, the tour goes to the same places, same boats, and same everything cause' the agencies act like middle man for the tour guides.

I tried bluffing the traders into thinking i was Thai buy spitting out a few Thai words.. but got in trouble when I couldn't answer their questions.. You could see their eyes suddenly widen,... spotting an oppoturnity to overcharge another dumb foreigner I guess..

yes, the activities you mentioned above are quite expensive by the usual Thai standard. I just came back from Phuket and I would say playing golf at the driving range and renting a car for sight-seeing around the island should be the cheapest activities that i've spent on.

Meal prices are generally more expensive in Phuket than in Bangkok. should expect to spend at least 200 baht for a decent meal in patong.

There is alot of water sports, elephant trekking, the beach, historical place, Phuket town and spa!!!

Phuket is a resort community and so the prices will be higher. You're competing with tourists from Japan and Korea for hotel rooms and meals, and they're willing to pay more.

Eat on the street or in the places the locals go if you can stand the spice and have an adventurous pallet.

You'll no doubt meet some of the local girls - you can't avoid it if you tried, and one of them may help you in finding lower prices.

It is quite expensive there unless you eat where the Thais eat. That is the most beautiful place I have been in Thailand during the day, I would get a motorbike and have a good drive round, but be very very careful! Also watch for police as they did me for having no driving license on me. I am sorry cannot help you with the rest of the question...!

Can anyone tell me what the weather will be like around this time. Has anyone been to Southern and Central Thailand around this period. I have reserved the holiday/flights etc but I have a deadline to book it by tomorrow morning so if anyone can throw me a lifeline before I opt to spend gazillions of pounds with the travel agent it would be a great help.

I was in Thailand (throughout most of the country) for two months between july-august. August in Thailand is still considered part of the rainy-monsoon season, which starts about april/may till about sept/oct. That sounds more torrential then it really seems. People say that the best time to travel Thailand is about dec-march. When i travelled during the rainy season the rain is an unexpected relief from the heat, but it can contribute to it being humid and muggy. If you are staying in hotels then i don't think that will be much of a concern as you will have relief from the humidity and heat when you are sleeping. I really didn't mind the weather though when i was there. Just prepared for some bursts of rain here and there. Majority of the time it will still be sunny and you'll still be able to enjoy all the cool outsidey things. The place is so beautiful you won't even notice.

We enjoyed the trip to the Similan Islands - although the accommodation was pretty basic (tents) but you can upgrade to a bamboo hut. Plenty of cheap accommodation around Patong beach, but you may want to do what we did - book a hotel on line for the first night and then find something more suitable

Housewife if it were me I would look into renting a house/villa, I would get one near or on the beach depending on what you can afford. I checked the Holiday Inn rates and they would be around $171.00 a night and a house rental would be around the same amount depending on the season. Take the all day snorkleing tour to Phi Phi Island, whether or not you want to actually snorkle. They pick you up at your hotel, and bring you back in the late afternoon. You visit several islands. Take the big boat, not the speed boat. It is cheaper, but much more comfortable and it is a relaxing day.

Tony's is a nice place to stay, good breakfast, nice pool, and close to the beach (if not on it, I can't remember). There's another place Pearl...something or the other, on the road going to the main beach. It is quiet, good breakfast. Sort of US motel quality. If that interests you and you can't find it online, leave a detail and I'll look it up and post. Both of the places I mentioned were about 1600 baht.

Spend the money, get the "good seats" and buffet and go to Fanta-Sea. It's worth it. (I think about 1500 baht each)

My mother came back from China in the middle of the night. She changed her schedule and could not contact any of us. As she speak very little Thai, she had to sleep on the floor with her luggage. No one seem to mind.

Try Thai Airways thru BKK (Bangkok), the possibilities look best on them.

Try Singapore Airlines as an alternate. For some reason my system doesn't show a published connection, but you can fly from HKT (Phuket) to SGN (Ho Chi Minh) connecting thru SIN (Singapore).

Also Malaysian does connect through Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

Fare prices would depend on when you are trying to go.

I don't believe any airline flies directly to HCMC from Phuket. You'll probably need to fly to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bangkok to connect to HCMC. Air Asia just started flying to HCMC from BKK and has great prices to HCMC and very good prices to BKK from Phuket. You also might want to check Nok Air, Thai Airways, 1,2 Go and Bangkok Airways from Phuket to Bangkok. Air France has very good prices from BKK to HCMC and is a better airline (I think) than Air Asia. Lots of other choices from KL or BKK to HCMC as well. Good luck.

I am looking for a nice mid range hotel in Patong. I was thinking about the k-hotel. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Tony Resort is quite nice. Patong Pearl Resortel is nice and cheaper, also close to the main beach and shopping without using the expensive (by Thai standards) taxis.

We stayed at the Novotel Resort situated above tsunami danger. It was classy.

There was a very good place - Azurro Village. I always stayed there. The location is very good and reasonable price.

There is a very nice place called, KN Hotel. It is located on a street, across from the Paradise Complex and a shortwalk to the beach. 1600 Baht/night

Should i send it royal mail from the u.k. or should I ship it via DHL?

Cost is based on method of shipping and weight. If you mail DHL yes it's the best but the most costly. Sending airmail from the Post Office is not as expensive but does cost a lot, but will get it to Thailand with in 7 to 10 days. Sending ground shipment is the cheapest but will take as long as two months. Go to the post office and check out the price and decide.

Spending money only, as i have already paid for the accomodation and airfare. So basically jst for sightseeing, snokelling, meals ect.

Bangkok & Phuket expenditure is similar.

Bangkok sightseeing mostly consist of temples, Grand palace, Chao praya river. Not so expensive = 3000baht including all 3 temples and taxii and entrance fee. Food, depends you going for restaurants( + - 300per meal) shop houses (+ - 100per meal)

Phuket - water sport is not cheap. Each activity or water sport cost abt 1000baht. food is cheaper here.

Prepare at least 20000baht is the safest

Food and drinks should cost between 200 and 1000 baht per person per day, dependent on where you eat and drink.

Souvenirs are up to you.

Sightseeing is a bit tricky. If yo regularly use the services if a tuk-tuk driver to bring you to the sights, it will cost you 500-1000 baht per person per trip. If you take the local buses it will cost you practically nothing.

I traveled there this christmas and it is absolutely beautiful! Patong beach is very nice as are most beaches around the area but you have to visit Phi Phi island. If you have ever watched the movie "The Beach", this is where they filmed it, just amazing scenery. If you plan on going in town be prepared for people all over trying to sell you things left and right, which can be fun, but gets annoying pretty quick. I would say to avoid most of the "massage" places unless you are told they are reputable. The food is extremely cheap and very good! Have fun!

Hi, congratulations. You have picked a lovely place to have your honeymoon. In fact you can check with the hotel if they have any honeymoon packages available during that period for the 2 of you to enjoy, like a couple spa and massage, plus in-room services for a couple of days while you 2 stay in.

Patong Beach will be nice, only thing is it is the most crowded place there. Do take your time to explore the beauty in other beaches like Karon and Kathu, and a few other smaller ones around the island. Theme parks abound in Phuket, visit Fantasea World, take a look at Simon Cabaret. All for good fun.

Time permitting, head to Krabi for lovely beaches and more island hopping tours.

June period, expect rain shower at times as this is the start of the rainy season and themporary thunderstorm can happen anytime. But you have a nice place to cosy in. So do have a great time.

June is a nice time in Thailand. - temperatures between 35 and 45 degrees Celsius. and an air humidity about 85%.

The only pleasant place to stay is indoors with the air con on.

Unless you like sweating.

And be aware!

Honesty, fair business and caring about other people are things NOT included in the Thai mentality.

June should be nice. However, if you are planning for a honeymoon, Patong beach might be a little noisy and busy for you? I would recommend this little village called Laguna Phuket, and one of the better hotels is Dusit Laguna cos it's right on the beachfront. Look for their Dusit Club Room. Just a few steps away from the beach, perfect for a honeymoon. check out their page at www.dusitlaguna.com and you can always let reservations know it's your honeymoon so they will have something special planned for you. June is also a great time to take advantage of the low season rates.

Expect occasional showers in June, though none should last longer than half and hour. Great to cool things down. Head out to Phi Phi island, but for the perfect white-sandy beach, check out Racha island. There is a lovely resort called The Racha there and it's also great for honeymoon. Quiet and secluded.

It's early in the rainy season I believe - but even then I hear it's nice and doesn't rain all the time or even most of the day. Just be ready for some brief heavy downpoors and rain at night. (I think)

You will also be fairly close to Kow Sok National Park if you are in Phuket. We visited there for a few days and stayed in some really cool tree houses just outside the park. The place we stayed was called the Nature Resort. It was family run and the people who own it are WONDERFUL! They cooked the best food we ate in all of Thailand, offered guided trips down the river or to the park - very cool - we dragged ourselves up at 5 am and headed out birdwatching by boat and watched a pair of hawks trying to steal a baby gibbon from it's mother - also hiking and swimming. (mamma gibbon won)

Next to the resort is a place called the monkey swimming hole that is a swimming hole in the river with a rope swing for humans and the monkeys hang out and watch.

We lied awake in the tree each night listening to the gibbons call to each other across the forest.

You're going to be close - I highly recomend it if you have enough time. P.S. running water and toilet in your tree!

I am about to fly to Phuket from Australia, with all the political protests - is it safe to be there as a tourist? Our authorities in Australia have issued a status of "high caution".

Read the Phuket Gazette online to be bang up to date, it is very very safe, not one foreigner has been injured in the slightest. The unfounded fear means there are fewer foreigners and bargaining is easy - high season with cheap prices - I am in Phuket now and it is fabulous.

They have stopped blocking the run ways at Phuket it is open for business as usually. Nothing to worry about. The protesters realized now that distributing tourism's is only going to hurt them more in the long run. Just stay away from any protests, it's not your business.

at the moment, it's stil safe. many tours fr HK stil flying bangkok daily n also to phuket. as phuket do not hv an area w/ all those government bldgs like in BKK. that's y they tried to block the airport ( as a target) last week in phuket. now seem ok..... people r slowing down. 4 the tourist's area + shopping area.......absolutely fine.

It's actually a great time to go. You'll have the place to yourself -well not literally - theres a snowballs chance of anything happening to you but the govts have to put out the alert to cover their you know whats.

Can you please tell me all the options you know... is it possible to fly from one island to the other? Do you have to take a ferry from Phuket to the mainland, cross on the train, and take another ferry? How does it work? How long does it take? How much does it cost? Thanks so much!

I flew from Koh Samui to Phuket, I have to say this is the best way to do it, it onlys takes about 1 hour, costs 2000 baht ($US50)

per person one way. Of course you can do it other ways if you are looking to save money and have plenty of time. You will have to catch a ferry to get on and and off both islands, the pier to get to Koh Samui is at Surat Thani, there are many departure times per day cost around 150b -300b, depending on the boat, there are slow boats and fast ones, slow boat takes half a day (you dont want to get that one) fast boat take 2 1/2 hours. Now in between Phuket and Samui you can catch bus. (if you dont mind hot crowded slow travel this will be the cheapest option.) As for trains i dont think they run between the two destinations, so its either bus or plane, I recommend the plane it can be a bit expenisve but it is sooo worth it especially if you dont have much time. I travelled all round Thailand in 05 and it was fantastic so I hope you have a great trip. Oh also get a copy of the Lonely Planet Thailand book because it contains some very useful information, it will give you specific details on how to get around, where to stay, what to do, everything and when I was there 99% of tourists had this book!

Yes, you can fly from Phuket to Koh Samui direct. Bangkok Airways is the only airline that flies directly into Koh Samui (they own the only airport, and have a monopoly on travel there). The website is www.bangkokair.com. Or you could check other airlines (or buses) that go to Surat Thani, and take a ferry to Koh Samui from there. You can take a bus directly from Phuket, as Phuket is connected by road to the mainland. Koh Samui is a great place, have fun!

Hi, fly with Bangkokair http://www.bangkokair.com if you do not have time. Otherwise the bus option for a leisurely drive is not that bad as noted by some poster. The air-con bus will be worthwhile to travel in comfort. The bus company do keep their buses clean.

Best, easiest and quickest way is to fly with Bankok Air. Takes about an hour. If not you will have to catch a stinky bus across the mainland and a boat to Samui. It will cost you a little less but take a hell of alot longer and is boring boring boring! Spend every minute you have over there having fun not stuck on a bus.

Word of Warning: If you catch the bus, get your passport and money etc in a neck pouch and sit on it with the neck strap wrapped around your wrist. Pick pocketers will try to get you while you sleep. And dont put valuable in your pockets when in a nightclub. My brother got done while we were there lasdt year and lost his wallet phone and camera all at once and didnt even feel it. I love driving but should I get a driver. I have been told that if you get someone to show you around they will take you to places where they get paid to take you too, I am only there for two weeks and I will have around 40.000baht would this be enough ( I hope it is )

YES YOU NEED A DRIVER. Driving over there is COMPLETELY different than the US. In fact, the first couple of times I was in a taxi over there I thought I was going to die, but you get used to the driving and begin to figure out that the taxi cab drivers are VERY skilled at driving. Not to mention that you drive on the other side of the road. Also traffic rules don't really apply to the Thai people because there isn't much reinforcement for them (cops). Most cops you see over there pull over motorcycles because they have tons of motorcycles over there. I would recommend taking a taxi to Bangkok. 40,000 baht for two weeks is enough.

I assumed that 40,000 baht is pocket money, air ticket and acoomodation are exclusive. If not, spare 2000-2500 baht/room/night for *** hotel.

40,000 baht is quite OK for two weeks, You can rent a car and drive by yourself. Buy a Phuket map and drive along, it's not complicate.

I don't recommend to have or hire someone to show you places. I know you can pay for that, but how can you know she/he is reliable, except you can get a certified guide or somebody you know.

Thai people are nice, but we know other people only by thier faces not their minds. So be very cautious, many Thais are good on hiding a sharp knife behind their sweet smiles.

Dont bother renting a car, there is enough cheap transport around, and driving in Thailand takes some getting used to..

If you rent a car in Phuket make sure your hotel has a parking lot. If you park a long the street you have to move it to the other side every morning at 6:00 am or the police will chain the tires. It's about 1.500 baht fine to get them to unlock the chain. The money will go right into the police officers pocket.

A motorcycle is more easy. They will keep your passport when you rent a car or motorcycle.

Why go to Phuket? If you live in south east asia I guess it would be a good idea. But if you live in the western hemisphere there are many great places to train in any martial art. You can find good, sincere practitioners all the way from north to south america.

Your mentioned activities are usually fixed prices, unless it is for a group of people (some discounts might be considered). For shopping, I have this to say: Never buy at the FIRST shop! This is where you checked out the price ;-) Now that you know the price, go hunting and bargain downwards. It all depends on the value of the item. Price can be slashed off as much as 50% off the initial asking price. Only buy when you think it is a reasonable offer. Walked away when you have offered your FINAL price (and not accepted by the vendor). He'll call you back if he really wants to sell it to you. AND NEVER CHECK THE PRICE (OF THE SAME ITEM, AT ANOTHER SHOP) once you have made a purchase - you might be heart broken (that you could actually get a BETTER price) :-)

For a start, dont buy them from the package tour company (if you are going with one).

There are many (MANY!) tour shops in each of the resorts. Get a quote off one, go to another, tell them you can get it chaper at X Agents, they will bring the price down.

Also, go last thing at night maybe 1 hour before they close for an activity you want to do the following day. You can get the price right down to the bone doing that.

Ask the concierge in any hotel, they can give you the going rates.

Typically, these prices are non-negotiable. But if you have a travel agent ID card, you may get them for free.

Ko Samui isn't so far from phuket, when I was there I got a boat (most of the journey is across sea) it was really cheap, no more than Â£5/ $8. That was a few years ago but it probably is similar, your really best waiting untill you get there.

I think if you take a plane it would be a lot faster and simple way to go. I don't know how much you have to pay if you have to take a boat from Phuket to mainland and take a bus to the other side of coast line then you have to take another slow boat to Koh Samui. If you have pretty of time, why not take a long way and enjoy the countryside.

Once you get to Phuket you can always ask as many people as you can and then you can process all the answers and refine it to fit your situation.

I think Phuket is on the Andaman sea and Samui is in the gulf of thailand. You have to take bus from phuket to surat and take the ferry from surat to samui island. There's no rail link between the 2 provinces.

VVIP bus doesn't mean that it has less people. you have to ask how many exactly people in it. 24 people is good. It means that you could lower the chair almost flat, for the overnight traveling.

Phuket can be fun even when it rains!!

The rainy season is officially between May and October, locally considered as the low season due to a decrease in tourists and cheaper hotel rooms which can make it a good time to come financially. However it doesn't necessarily rain every day and recently the climate seems to have changed perhaps due to global warming.

If you really want to be sure of sun and no rain, the period between January and March is usually the driest, some years there is no rain at all, although last year the rain spread throughout the year.

Another time to be avoided is the 2 week period surrounding Chinese New Year, as most hotels are fully booked by people from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, China and Chinese Thai citizens. At this time of year most beaches, boats, restaurants and the like are usually overbooked and I would advise choosing March as it is much less crowded!

Rain in Phuket tends to come on and off and you would be unlucky to have 2 weeks of solid rain, just check out the history of Phuket's weather on the wunderground site below, book your trip and stay lucky!

November until March is the most comfortable times to visit, when the average high temperatures are in the mid 70s, and there is little precipitation.

Tourist season is from November until April, during which time hotel prices are at their highest. If crowds are an issue when planning a vacation, avoid these months. But realize that these months are the most crowded because the weather is the nicest!

In regards to beaches, shopping and interesting things to do and see.

Bangkok is a city without beaches. The nearest beach to Bangkok is probably Pattaya.

If you are into beaches, phuket is definitely the place to be. Remember to find your way to patong beach where all the activities take place.

Visit both. If you intend to fly directly from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket your next questions will be about not having enough time to make connections or the lack of cheap hotels in the airport area!

See Bangkok for at least a couple days and also end up there the night before your flight home. This will give you a chance to see the city a little, get caught up on your sleep and adjust to the heat and time changes. A final night in Bangkok will allow you to do some final shopping and take away any worry on your connecting flight breaking down and you missing your ride home.

You can find beaches just about anywhere in the world but you will only find Bangkok in Thailand! See Bangkok and also see some of the other place too! Thailand is more than just beaches! Besides, Thailand is warm all over - you can get a tan just walking around Bangkok or Chiang Mai anyway!

P.S. Bangkok has two airports! Many of the flights to other areas of Thailand fly out of old Don Muang DMK airport. Don Muang is on the other side of Bangkok from the International airport BKK!

I did that recently.

First day - Arrival in Bangkok, shop at Chatuchak Weekend Market (cool place cheap stuff)

Second day - Took sky train to Ekkamai station and went to the bus station nearby to take a bus to Pattaya. Journey to Pattaya should be one and a half hours. Spent 2nd day at Pattaya jet skiing, taking photos at the beach and beautiful sunset, ate, walked down the beach.

Third, Fourth, Fifth day - Went back to Bangkok, went to the following places :

Suan Lum Night Bazaar (cool cool cool! Famous for a gigantic stage with performances thru the night and lots of stalls)

Patpong (Bangkok's sex district, interesting place with lots of stuff to buy too)

Baiyoke sky hotel (Bangkok's tallest building with a revolving rooftop at 84th floor)

Khao San (A MUST GO at NIGHT! Backpackers' haven, night stalls, night life, cheap doing of dreadlocks etc..)

Pratunam (Rows of stalls)

Chinatown

MBK shopping mall (Modern shopping mall. HUGE and shopping haven with cheap prices. YOU CAN BARGAIN !)

All these places are near sky train stations in Bangkok. If you take a taxi, INSIST on paying by the meter. If the driver refuses, just flag down another taxi. Most drivers are willing to go by meter. Just tip them. Going by meter is MUCH MUCH cheaper. If you need directions, ask the sky train station control people! They are quite friendly.

Also, you can stay at Pattaya 2 nights, if you are not really a city person.

But it is BEST that you visit both Bangkok and Pattaya. It is feasible if you will be in Thailand for 5 to 6 days.

Enjoy and take lots of photos!

(Some people advise against going to Pattaya. There are other beaches too that the buses travel to at Ekkamai bus station. Just enquire there.)

Dont think you can use the term first class seat and cheap in the same sentance...If you shopping around for cheap first class then you obviously cant afford it to start with...

The best website I have found to search for less expensive flights is www.expedia.co.uk . (I agree with other posters, no business or first class tickets can be said to be cheap).

There is DEFINITELY a huge price difference between different business class ( same with first class) tickets. generally the airlines of the country where you fly to might offer cheaper rates. (look at what Thai air asks, though I found them expensive) My personal experience has been that from South Africa, Emirates offers the cheapest Business Class tickets to Thailand without losing any quality, comfort etc. There were other carriers who were less expensive than Emirates, but I would rather fly coach on a good carrier than business class on a carrier where safety and comfort is second class.

Try Eva Air first. Eva has flights from London to BKK. Also, if you don't mind to depart from other European cities. You may check out Eva Air (Amsterdam and Vienna) and China Airlines. Since their final destination is Taipei (via BKK), they may have better price for routes like this (different markets and clientele). Perhaps you want to go to a travel agent. If you can find their "key agency", it is even better. These two airlines may provide a "special net rate" for their biz or first classes.

It may help to know what country your departing from. There are a few international flights to Phuket but most flights have to go to Bangkok and then another flight to Phuket.. As for cheap and first class that doesn't match. Ride coach if you want cheap like the cheap.

I recommend staying at Karon Beach. The main beach where all the action is at is Patong, however the beach isn't really that pretty and the place is very crowded.

I've stayed at some on some other really nice beaches, like Nai Thon, and I liked them because they weren't crowded, but it took almost an hour and almost $20 (U.S.) to get to Patong.

Karon on the other hand is close, yet still a lovely beach that isn't overly crowded. Sort of the best of both worlds.

If you prefer more happening area try to stay at patong, that's where the shops,pubs and markets are located, especially if you are on a budget trip and dont want to spend extra money on travelling from one beach to another (the tuk tuk taxis can be quite expensive) Patong beach is more crowded and not as nice as Karan and Kata beach. However if you would like to visit more beautiful beaches, you can book an island hopping day trip to nearby islands where you can swim and snorkel. There are lots of local agencies in Patong offering many types of day trip packages.

I'm not gonna comment just will try to answer your question. Even though I do not know the best tattoo shop in Phuket I can assure you that most of them are good and very good. The staff is well qualified and experienced. All of them use new needles. So I would not be worried about choosing the right place. Just go to any place (Patong would be the best) and just ask for the prices. As I said, they are all similar in quality and service. And as mentioned, Patong area would be the best place to do it.

Ehmagawd. Do not tattoo on your eyebrows. That looks gross. It's just.. UH! Disgusting. e e; You should be happy with your own eyebrows.. and if you think that they are too big, get them waxed, not tattooed. Naiharn Beach is my favorite beach on Phuket. It's probably the best beach for swimming and sunbathing. It's also off the beaten path so it's not so crowded, but the setting is beautiful. I usually rent a jeep when I go to Phuket which allows me to visit all of the island. After a day of swimming and sunbathing at Naiharn, I usually swing by Rawai Beach on the way back to my hotel. Rawai Beach also has a lot of atmosphere as well as the lowest prices on Phuket. I usually stay at Patong Beach. There's a cool American restaurant called Jimmy's Lighthouse on Ao Chalong (Chalong Bay) that drips with atmosphere, especially at night. You can check it out at the link below. Also, you might want to go into Phuket Town so that you can go to the restaurants on Phuket Hill. The restaurants are good and inexpensive and you'll have a panoramic view of much of the island. There's a lot of favorite things for me on Phuket.

I was there last Feb and took a tour with a very nice guide that went from Patong Beach to the southern highest peak where you could see for miles, then to an aquarium, cashew factory, the pearl factory, and then back to the Novotel where we stayed. It as very relaxing and informative. I would have liked to travel out to James Bond Island though and may do that this Feb when I go again. I hear the scuba diving is excellent and inexpensive to obtain certification. Bars are bars....hot chicks, cheap booze.

Diff. nice beaches (Patong excl.) and easy access by boat to other lovely islands, good, especially seafood and loads of fun! Last but not least: the weather - it might rain for a few hours (can be very refrehsing) but it's still warm.

u can buy there ur sunblock, lip balm with spf, eyedrops, jeez dont forget to buy eyedrops...the sun is too high, ur eyes cant take it even on a pair of shades! ur swim suit, u anjust bought it there...i bought 2 nice esprit two piece though its not real, but u can't tell...plus it's just swim wear...i bought a cheap one but it's not that good, the psuedo esprit ones are good...no need for you to bring clothes coz there are lot of shopping! i bought 3 sun dresses here...i also bought a nice hat!

i guess u'll never have a hard time finding ur size in phuket...

I can only speak from personal experience as a tourist, but my mistake the first time to Thailand was to bring clothes that were too heavy/thick to wear in Thailand. I'd been to Australia, so I knew enough not to bring stuff like denim jeans etc, but even cotton chinos, light casual jackets etc were useless 99% of the time. I think I wore them for travelling on the plane there and back, and that was about it.

Phuket would be around low thirties centigrade at the moment, which is still plenty warm. Just bring the lightest clothes possible, plenty of casual stuff (t-shirts, shorts, sandals etc) and as Ronnie says, leave your suitcase half empty. Thailand generally and Phuket in particular is strongly geared towards the tourist industry and they have plenty of clothes for sale for the larger westerners who visit. That's not a reference to you so much as me - I'm 240lbs and I had no problem buying stuff to wear.

Travel lightly, leave loads of space in your luggage, buy what you need as you go along.

It's probably very hot and humid there right now, as they are just getting into the hot season. Most Thai women are small, but you should be able to find your size. Bringing as little as possible is a good idea. The last time I was in Thailand, I went absolutely crazy buying things! Have a good time.

Your find your size here in Thailand. However, if your going to spend any time in Bangkok you will find cloths cheaper then in Phuket. Try the Pratunam Area, and MBK along with Siam Square.

You will have no problems getting clothes. Great markets and super bargains. Hot and Humid. Bring just a few items like swimwear, expensive here.

It's been a particularly wet season this year and I'd like to get some protection from the elements.

When I go to Phuket, I never wear a raincoat! Too restrictive.

They have them in vending machines in the gas station restrooms that taste like cherries. I find this odd since most people do not make it a habit of tasting rain coats. My husband loves the rain and chooses not to be protected from the elements.

I prefer to go to Phuket without a raincoat..but it's a personal decision I guess.

If you wear a raincoat when you go to Phuket, you wont get 3 babbys in 3 years!

We are going to stay at a resort in Kata Noi in Phuket and everything we read says that Kata Beach is "just over the hill". Does anybody know how far over the hill? Can we walk, or do we have to catch the shuttle/tuktuk?

Hi, I am travelling to PHuket next month. I need to know how much the taxi drivers would charge me if I want to take a cab from Phuket airport to Baipho Lifestyles hotel (near Kathu beach)?

There are taxis and "taxis" and Phuket airport is one of the worst for the other kind. Ignore all those lurkers in and about the entrance. Go outside, turn right and about fifty yards down you will see an official taxi booth. You may have to wait your turn but they will quote you a set fee before you set out. If you don't feel like waiting too long you can move back to the squabble outside the door and bargain a lower fee than the official taxi has quoted you. I reckon about 700 Baht is not bad.

009, 008 is cheaper to phone internationally than 001 from a land line in Thailand but don't know about doing this on a mobile is any cheaper

You can buy 2nd hand older phones pretty cheaply in Thailand at Pantip plaza in BKK, tuk-com in Pattaya or Star plaza in Rayong...am sure there are similar places in Phuket...

New phone prices are comparable with the UK, if not a little more expensive for the newer models....

Phone cards for the mobiles are quite expensive to use per minute and not all phone cards will let you dial internationally so you need to check before you buy...

When i was there they were no cheaper than in England.

Check prices at home before you go, make a list and check over there. Haggle and get the price down. Down a fair bit as warranty might not work when you get back home. If you want to call an text cheaply over there, just get a sim card, prepaid. After breathing texting is the second in line in Asia as far as first needs for sustaining life is concerned.....so the phone companies keep it cheap, otherwise they'd all die!

My girlfriend and I want to go for a relaxing and quiet beach holiday in Phuket. We dont want crowds, just somewhere cheap, with one restaurant, a white beach and a flat sea. I was lucky enough to have lived in thailand as a kid in the 80's, but all the quiet places we used to know are now heaving with tourists. Any suggestions would be appreciated - we dont mind travelling on land for a few hours to find it!

If you go to Phuket you will find tourist crowds everywhere, why not try something like the Dolphin Bay Resort.

Nice and quiet,no crowds,right on the beach,flat sea,good restaurant,great staff.

I have 2 holdays (one week in phuket and 5 nights in Bali) booked for August (yes both of them).

Its ok to travel upto 28 weeks although you may need a certificate from your doctor to say that your not a high risk or anything. My friend is 21 weeks and about to fly to Spain for a week and she has had no problems at all although she did need the certificate.

my teacher is only 3 months pregnant and we were scheduled to go on a weekend field trip about 6 hours away and we had to cancel it because she told us that her doctor said it isn't really safe because if something happens and you need your doctor you'll be too far from them.

My wife and I have three kids, so I'm kind of an expert. It's always potentially risky to travel any distance from home when you're past your first trimester. Remember, home is where your doctor is, as well as the hospital.

Travelling to a "third-world" country is asking for trouble. Unless you know for sure they have world class medical facilities, I wouldn't recommend it. If you have any complications, it could be disastrous. Good luck.

There is a 1 1/2 hour break from arrival to next departure.

Some tourists go through customs at Bangkok and then go on to their connecting flight. Do you have two different airlines involved? Are your bags checked all the way through to Phuket? If you have to pick them up at Bangkok you will have to go through customs.

Better hope your connecting flight is from Suvarnabhumi and not from Don Muang because you will not make your connection. Too many tourists want to blow off seeing Bangkok and don't allow enough time for connections or even have the right airport.

If you are with the same airline that brings you to BKK you can check with that airline. But if your bags are not checked through to Phuket you have to get them! If you have the same ticket from your country through to Phuket you probably will not have to go through customs.

I have passed through customs in around 20 minutes and had to wait longer for the bag to show up. If your arriving flight and your connecting flight is with the same airline they are more forgiving.

How is your return flight to Bangkok do you have tight connections?

Hope it works out for you, try to see Bangkok if you have not been there before. Even Bangkok is sunny enough to give you a tan walking around!

I am wanting to go to Thailand for a month with a friend and the places we are interested in seeing are, Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Pattaya. We will be getting our plane to Bangkok and spending 1/2 nights there and then going to the other destinations. We would like to finish at Pattaya so we are close to Bangkok for the flight back.

Best way is to fly to Phuket, Koh Samui. Cheapest is to take the overnight bus. Best way to Pattaya is either taxi or bus. Best way to Koh Phangan is fly to Koh Samui and ferry to Phangan. You can also do the train to Sarat Thani and then van to pier for ferry ride to Samui.

It get's worse to make forecasts since now it should be very dry,hot but it's raining almost every night. Mid May the rainy season starts to get in full swing but again I don't dare anymore to predict anything.

May to October is traditionaly the raining season ( but now some call it Green season ! ). May is not the worst time for weather but it is also not the best time, November to March is the best time for weather. But I agree with Madonna it changes so much now.

try asiarooms.com They have the cheapest internet accomodations I've seen so far. Best of all, you can read users' review. There are many beach-front hotels and resorts, all inexpensive. Try The Bay Hotel (>US$35 per night). Leonardo Decaprio stayed there! The only bad news is you can't get immediate confirmation. Do you mean Feb 2009?

There are no direct flights from New Delhi to Phuket as far as I can tell -- you need to transfer either in Bangkok, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur. With a good connection, you can arrive in ~8 hours.

Hard to say when to buy the ticket. You can certainly buy it in Canada before you go. The benefits are 1) you can lock in the price in CAD, and 2) you're guaranteed a seat.

You will in all likelihood be able to buy a ticket locally. It might (or might not) be cheaper, and you may be able to find a smaller regional airline with a better deal. But if you don't want to risk it, then book in advance. If you don't mind a gamble, you might find a bargain.

Taxi is the best way and nothing is safe when your in any vehcile in Thailand.

A taxi is the best way, it may not be the cheapest but will take you right to where you want to go and won't leave you walking around town with your luggage looking for your hotel. When you exit the Phuket air terminal turn right, at the end of the terminal across a small road is a taxi stand that will arrange a metered taxi into Patong and won't rip you off, the fare should be around 425 baht or so.

Well sorry to say you cant say cheapest and safest in the same question, relating to transport in Thailand.

Get a metered taxi at the airport and make sure they have the meter switched on that way you can't get ripped off....

Do not take any limo services offered at the airport as you will be ripped off...

There is a minibus transfer-service for about 100 THB from and to the airport that stops at various locations on the Island. You might have to wait 30 minutes or so for the bus to fill-up and it does stop a few times before you arrive at Patong beach, but it is safe AND cheap.

Going to Phuket in early Jan. Might stay at PineapplePhuket in Karon Beach. I'm worried that the taxi will charge me $10 US to get to Patong Beach where all the fun is. Should I stay in Patong Beach instead?

I did the (very short) trip once. The driver asked for 500 and we agreed to 300 baht.

I think there is songtao service between the two beaches which is like 20 or 40 baht. I am not sure as I rented a car there (about 1000 baht per day). Anyway, renting a motorbike or a car might prove to be more cost effective for you. I enjoyed Karon Beach, so, I would not change accommodations just to stay on a more touristy beach.

If you can ride motor bike, you better rent one so that you can run around easily. Taxi in Phuket are private cars, but they accept passengers. Those taxi park at hotels/or resorts to get customers, they charge only a standard rate of 500 bath no matter how short or long the distant is. Metered taxi can get only at the airport. Karon to Patong is not so far, but walking is not recommended. If you like night life, don't care with privacy, you better stay at Pathong.

patong is bar central on phuket,but out of patong....

My personal favourite is on the road to Rawai from Karon.The road follows the cliffs around numerous bays and is very hilly for about 5km south of kata/karon.The name of the bar is a blur but it's very laid back(very), reggae based,but not too much and stunning views,being built on stilts over the cliff side.Sure,it's not exactly conveniently located but is a must go.A beer is around 70bht,but after 1 or 10 who cares

however, if you are paying more than a buck a beer, you are getting ripped off. Thailand rocks!

God, you know I'd go anywhere with a name like that just for kicks and to say I had gone. I know it is not pronounced the way we would, but just our rules of pronunciation applied to it make it so much fun!

From an American living in Singapore: Absolutely go to Phuket. Or even Samui. Both are beautiful. Take boat tour to James Bond Island and other snorkeling places. We stayed at the Phuket Arcadia a while back (before the flood). Go to Patong for a wild evening, it's great. I like to scope out vacation destinations for return visits. Vietnam-NO, Bali-NO, India-HELL NO, Phuket-YES.

Personally, I wouldn't swim in the water there, knowing that just two years ago thousands of dead people were floating in it.

It depends what you want or what sort of person you are. For a Western sensibility, it may be a bit too intense/backpacker-y.

If you're younger and looking for a fun, free-wheeling, night-life sort of experience, its great. Things are incredible cheap, there is plenty to do in terms of active things. But if you are looking for a more "luxury" vacation then its a bit on the crass side. Its more or less jam-packed with European and Scandinavian back-packer type tourists, they make up the bulk of the city and the bulk of its activities. So lots of clubs, bars, backpacker hotels, beach activites, etc.

If you want a more high-class experience, look elsewhere. Karon and Patong are about the same, Karon is just smaller and somewhat less over-the-top.

A good experience to try there is a chartered multi-day boat trip to the nearby Islands like Similan Islands, especially for Scuba diving. These islands are amazing, and get you away from the noisy streets of town for a few days, but are pricey.

Great place to go any time of year, a visit Bangla Road (Patong Beach) after dark is an absolute must. If you want to swim in the sea go to Kamala beach, it is less crowded and the motor-cycle ride along the coast there is fun.Not too much beer though, remember you have to ride the bike !

How many days is sufficient for the true phuket experience?

I would like to do sea canoe, elephant treking, para sailing, jet ski, snorkeling and shopping. Is 5 days enough? What else should i do?

5 days is actually plenty - wit hthis ime frame you could even spend a night on phi phi island (day trips are also available). i recon you could do this in 3 days, and possibly spend a couple of days in Krabi.

Also re your question about Patong beach - it is busy and vibrant there - but just 10 mins around the corner though is Kaon beach where:

accommodation is cheaper

the beach is cleaner and less crowded

there are plenty of stalls and restaurants (and bars)

you can arrange the trips you mention at the local shops

you can easily get to patong beach at any time

Also - take care to negotiate a price for trips before you go there and specify 'no stops'. they will often take tourists to gem shops and tailors on the way to a destination (this really only happened to us in bankok, but beware)

5 days is enough to make you wish you'd taken a 2 month vacation. Thailand is not the kind of place you wanna go home from in a hurry!

5 days 4 nite is enough but too rush liao.you will b too tired and cant really enjoy & relax the phuket life.may b stay about 7-8 days. that is a enjoyable & relaxation place especially at patong beach.

We have never been to Thailand. The group has the following doubts:

Hotels will be full of old people?

We wont be able to socialise with anyone?

We wont be able to drink or party?

Funny I think the same way

Hotel will be full with immature young kids

We would be able to socialize with anyone

We won't be able to relax because all these kids are drinking and partying

Thailand is a great place to holiday for young and old alike. There is lots for the younger generation to do. Lots of watersports in Pattaya Jomtien Phuket and HuaHin. Just dont act like a bunch of 'lager louts'

Well, both Phuket and Bangkok have very similar cuisines, because both are in the native land of Thailand, the only difference really is the quality of the food. Bangkok is much higher quality than just the somewhat plain Phuket style.

Heck yes, but the prices will generally be higher in Phuket and the selection better in Bangkok.

Yes - as what already been said - Bangkok has better price but you can get ANYTHING in Thailand. And most of them are of decent quality.

A tip about bargaining (haggling) - DON'T start haggling unless you are serious about buying. It is not fair to the vendor when you haggle the price with no intention of buying. If you do this constantly - words will get around and people won't be willing to give a good deal or be as friedly. This is of course different to walking away if the price is too high or unreasonable.

Also - remember that this is Thailand. Note one of the answer above about not getting stuff at the first shop you come to. LOOK AROUND FIRST! Once you get the goods at a price you like but then further down the street it was offered at a cheaper price, you can't take it back and demand they give you the same price. So- BUYERS BEWARE!

Have fun shopping in Phuket. Have fun haggling for prices. Haggle ruthlessly but patiently and light hearted. Remember that haggling is for fun. Don't expect everything to be dirt cheap. It is all cheap already anyway.

You should be able to get hold of them in Phuket. But the best place to do shopping will be in Bangkok. Try a stopover for a quick spot of shopping if you can fit it into your schedule.

It is wrong of me to encourage this and I apologise first BUT Phuket is a designer fakes haven. There are fakes galore and well made too. A tourist with a limited budget will have a good time there buying and buying. A word of caution, don't be blown away at the first shop, compare prices as you walk down the street, and bargaining is the name of the game.

For variety and better shopping experience, Bangkok offers a different dimension. Prices reasonable and people are friendly and kind.

Phuket has designer fakes. Just a walk down Bangla Road at Patong beach convinces you that they have everything there, but always always always bargain. Do not accept the first quoted price. Cut by at least half then slowly bargain up until you are comfortable with the price.

Even with copy products, the quality is quite good, so it can cost quite a bit, so don't expect dirt cheap.

Anything from Rolex watches to Gucci bags. No problem.

You can get just about anything there. Shop around, drive a tough bargain, start low then walk away, come back later. Never pay the asking price.

I am traveling to Phuket, Thailand from US with a hour and half layover in South Korea.?

Do I need to go through customs in South Korea or my final destination in Phuket ? Will a hour and a half be a long enough lay over to make my Phuket flight ? Do I need to claim my luggage in South Korea and re check it or will it just arrive in Phuket ? We are flying Korean Airlines.

In Seoul you will just follow the signs for transit passengers, no customs required. There is a security check though.

When you initially check in make sure you bags are checked through to your final destination. Then check the claim check the ticket agent gives you and see if it says Phuket on it. If not you must tell the guy to change it to Phuket.

It should be plenty of time. Since you're flying the same airline all the way to Phuket, you'll receive boarding passes for both your flights when you check in at your departure city. Make sure your luggage is forwarded to Phuket and all you'll need to do is go from the arrivals area to the departure area and find your gate in Korea. You may have to clear security again in Korea, but that's about it. Just ask someone or follow the signs for transit or transfer, and no you don't need to clear customs in Korea as long as you stay within the transit and departure areas. You will definitely need to clear immigration and customs in Phuket though.

As you will be in transit at the airport in South Korea, there will be no need to go through customs there and your luggage will be all the way checked through to Phuket International Airport. Please note that even if you were to fly with a different airline from South Korea to Phuket then your luggage would still be checked all the way through to Phuket, Thailand.

Since you are staying on the same airlines you do not need to do anything. As long as you do not leave the secure area of the airport you do not need to go through customs.

Usually 1 1/2 hours is not enough time to make a connection on international flights, but since this was booked on the same company you should be fine.

Korean Air is a very good company and I enjoy their flights and service.

You won't have to do anything in South Korea. Your luggage will be transferred for you. You will go through customers in Phuket, not South Korea.

Enjoy Thailand and be sure to go for a facial at the mall in patong. It is pure bliss, even for boys.

Also just be sure to keep your witts about you when going in to bars etc. I got caught out and had to pay Â£ 70 just to get out of a bar. It does not happen alot but sometimes the girls will ak you to by them drinks and when you do they charge you like Â£20 a drink. So just be careful.

don't miss FantaSea, get the best tickets, and the buffet is good. Take day snorkel trip to Phi Phi Island. Another day trip and long boat ride to Sea Gypsy Village and James Bond Island. If you can, rent motorbike and go around Phuket, if waterfalls are running you can visit a few, very nice.

Note: I live in Thailand, and Phuket isn't very much like the rest of the country, but the scenery and the things I mentioned are nice. Everything is more expensive there, buy your gifts elsewhere.

Wonderful tiny little seafood restaurant, with enormous prawns as you enter Karen beach, leaving Patong. Old lady helped up pick several types of fresh seafood, and it was some of the best eating ever, almost 2000 baht, though! But worth it.

Additional: I have stayed away from the tourist area, and was BORED TO DEATH, I like Patong area; However, I live here, and can be quiet and secluded at my own home. If you want a real treat...go to look out point down the road several km from Patong, look down to your left, and there's a tiny cove. You can go swimming or wading there, and it is wonderful. Sep's considered as low season here, there are still many promotions for resorts/hotels/guest house. Try to search, compare the price & read comments would be help.

Does Phuket has shopping malls like in Bangkok ?

I've nvr been to either Phuket or Bangkok. But would like to go for a 4D3N holiday which has shopping, food n preferably with beach as well. Does these two offer same levels of shopping malls/markets ? N which places in Phuket n Bangkok ?

Phuket has a few malls, but nothing compared to Bangkok, the Central World Plaza Mall and Siam Paragon are among the largest in the world, and there are dozens of other large and very large malls, not to mention hundreds of outdoor markets and the world's largest "outdoor" market, Chatuchak or JJ's. There are no beaches in Bangkok, the closest beaches are about an hour and a half away, and aren't nearly as nice as the beaches in Phuket, which is an island and surrounded by very nice beaches. Same for food, there are plenty of restaurants in Phuket, but thousands more with more choices in Bangkok. Bangkok is a huge congested city, Phuket is a beautiful tropical island that is crowded in a few areas, you can't compare the two places.

Well Phuket doesn't have huge malls like Bangkok but beautyful beaches...

The biggest mall in Phuket is called "Central Festival" or "Jungceylon" in Patong.

Jungceylon at Patong sounds like a great place to shop. There're some shopping malls in Phuket but I don't think it will be anything compare to Bangkok. In my opinion, stuff in Phuket is kinda expensive because they're for tourists!!! I never really do any shopping when I go to Phuket.

Shopping in Bangkok is 10 times better.

You are coming during the tourist season and hotel rooms are harder to find, it may be better to book in advance. If you go say during July rooms are not hard to find.

You might be in trouble without a pre-booking with 6 adults/3 kids. Most places are fully booked since month's this time of the year especially rather cheap spots... Try a Hotel/Resort on Internet before taking any chances or consult your local travel agent.

I definitely recommend pre-booking your hotel, I was there recently and had a very difficult time finding a good hotel in a good location, same with some friends of mine who were there last week. I'm sure the hotel desk at the airport will have something, but if you want a better choice, I think it's best to do it as far in advance as possible. Phuket seems to be more crowded this year than the last few years. Have fun.

I would always book it before you get there. If something is going on and alot of rooms are sold. you do not want to be S.O.L. if there are no rooms. (I work at a hotel and in concert season we get people who want rooms but we are sold out. they always say I didn't think to make a reservation. those people always sleep in their cars.)

with that large of a party you may want to try to book something before you leave.

Generally when travelling you can always find a place for 1-2 people but not for large groups.

You don't want to get there and find out that you are gonna have to stay and 3 different locations and the possibility of being miles apart.

As it is high season not likely you will find anything cheap.

My first visit to phuket years ago, when I arrived got in a taxi and drove to patong, the driver said that I would not be able to find something just walking in. He offered to make stop before arriving in Patong at a travel shop where they can book. As I did for 7 days, this worked fine only later I found out that the late booking was almost double and commision was paid to the taxi driver.

Again I had a nice hotel and I wont blame the people in LOS as they are always willing to help but always against a cost, don't forget. follow the link below and choose for safety

i recommend you pre book at least the first night, december and january are the high season in phuket, lots of foreigners arrive and prices for all hotel goes up about 50%. you don't want to be looking around for a hotel with 3 kids. not my idea of fun.

Most of the beachfront accommodation you find in Phuket are found on the quieter beaches such as Nai thon, Bang Tao and Kamala beaches. The more upmarket beach resorts are on Kata Noi and Karon but also found on Bangtao (it's crawling with expensive pool villa resorts). I should note that while normally Kata Noi is a bit nicer than its sister beach Kata in the high season - I've been told that it's a bit rougher in the low season therefore Kata is the choice. But that's just hearsay.

Sept is the low season so a smattering rain is common. But it usually lasts for a couple of hours. I was there in July and it rained for the first 3 days for a couple of hours in the morning. The rest of the day would be fine and the remaining 4 days was beautiful and sunny. So don't worry abt it - there will be sunshine :)

That is, you can find the ones available for booking on the internet. I'll give a plug to Laguna Resorts since I used to work there. Try Laguna Beach Resort. It's a beautiful, quiet beach. youv'e watched the movie(the beach) once too often friend.As others have said ain't no such place.Phang-nga is on the bus route down to Phuket and isn't an island as such,not in the resort destination sense,more like a day trip.If you mean Koh Phaghan (or any of the million other ways to spell it) ,you need to be on the other side of the peninsular(look for Koh Samui on your map)

Phuket is lovely with plenty of shopping, I think it should be enough for you. Bangkok may have plenty more shops but Phuket balances it out with the natural beauty and friendly locals. Shopping in Phuket is concentrated mainly in Patong area, with the local shopping as well as the newly opened Jungceylon. Phuket Town is also another area with Ocean department store and Robinsons. Over the weekend there is the flea market in town as well known as "thai rote" so you can let your taxi driver know, and always arrange with him to pick you up cos it might be hard to catch a cab there nowadays with the tourist crowd. THere is also Central FEstival in town. Good idea would be to go to Central Festival during the day and head to flea market in the evening (only weekends though) as they are quite close by.

Airport transfer to Patong takes about 300 - 400 Baht, go look for the metered taxi counter outside the airport. At least you know you are paying as your travel, not just ridiculous inflated rate. However, if you do want to take a regular taxi, get the driver's number and name and bargain with him, use him for your daily travels and you might get a better rate if you promise to use his services againt. a metered taxi driver can do the same as well. However, just get a quote from the hotel regarding the transfer rates to compare. Hotel transfer might be more convenient as well as you don't need to bargain.

Hi, a new shopping just opened recently in Phuket call Jungceylon Shopping Center. Reportedly the largest, you should be alright with it,plus the couple of Central Festival and Ocean Robinson. And the couple of night markets around.

However the shopping cannot compare to Bangkok for sure. You get lots more shops in Bangkok.

As for transfer, compare the rate the hotel provides and what you pay for public transport. Check with your hotel, may be free service from the better ones, if request is made early.

I have only ever been happy with one tailor in all my years in Phuket and I do know that they can make excellent ladies dresses. Surat Thai to Phuket is about 3 hours. In my opinion you are better off just taking a bus form Bangkok to Phuket directly, it would be faster and probably cheaper.

A boat from Phuket to Phi Phi takes roughly 1 hour.

I have driven it before but can't remember the distance, it's about a 3 hour drive. I still can't understand why people will take a train and bus to Phuket when you can get a bus trip which I believe will cost you less then both a train and bus. The bus from Bangkok to Phuket is about 12 hours. The train and bus a little longer. They only have 1 track in many areas and if another train is passing you can be stopped and waiting. Bus is more reliable to me.

Its safe to hire a scooter or car......but not so safe to actually drive them anywhere....

Do a bit of research on the internet ie Thaivisa/Pattaya mail....and you will find plenty of stories of Ting tong farangs getting wiped out on scooters, some very seriously hurt or even killed...

Does your B/F even have a motorbike license ?....legally in Thailand you are suppose to have a license to ride one....

There are 1000's of Thai nationals getting seriously hurt or killed every year on motor bikes and on the whole a Thai is usually learning to ride a motor bike from a very early age as its a primary means of transport....

When you get to Phuket have a look at the ankles and legs of Thai people you will find at least 80% of them have scars on the legs and ankles from riding bikes..!!!!

If you want to be a bit safer rent a car, but you need to learn to drive like a Thai pretty quickly...as not the same as where you are coming from....basically there are very few rules of the road...the laws are there...but very few people follow them....but at least in a car you have some steel around you...

Its better and cheaper to get around by taxi, bus or baht bus or even at a push a tuk-tuk

....This is not strictly true provided you are driving on a legitimate license with insurance etc etc and its not your fault...where people get caught out with this one is that 9 times out of 10, they do not have a proper license, insurance etc and as with any other country in the world...if you have an accident your fault or not and dont have a license you are liable for payment....this is not unique to Thailand....

As tourist in Thailand and in an accident provided you are legal you have the same rights as anybody else....yes the injured party/police will try and make you pay up, but if insured and legal call the agent let them deal with it....if not legal...time to put your hand in your pocket and pay up...

I would not hire a scooter or car in Phuket if you have never ridden or driven one in Phuket before. Phuket has the worse the drivers in Thailand. I live in Phuket and dare not ride a scooter, cause drivers always cut you off without signaling or looking.

Also the road from Patong to Phuket Town is one of the worse streets in Phuket.

If you do decide to, keep this in mind, Although there are rules of the road, no one ever follows them. So pretty much, do what you have to do to survive.

If you are from the US or some country that drives on the "right" side of the road - don't bother with driving in Thailand until you have been there a while. Your reflexes will be different in an emergency situation and you may make the wrong decision!

There are some scams with motor scooters where you are charged for scratches and dings that you didn't make. Take a photo of the bike and any defects before you take off.

If you get in an accident expect to pay for the damage, your fault or not! Because, as a tourist that can fly out of Thailand, the police may confiscate your passport until restitution is made! Insurance companies may pay you back later but an accident will inconvenience you - if it doesn't kill you first!

The Thais that you see with scars, it is natural, as most Thais start driving on scooters before puberty. It is the main transport for the vast majority of Thais, and for them a mishap is inevitible, HOWEVER, for a casual tourist- the vast majority who rent bikes while they are here do so without getting killed or maimed. Just be safe and you will be fine.

Riding a scooter in Phuket is very popular but you need to accept that you are taking life in your own hands. While there are roads and traffic laws, people do drive and ride how it suits them. I have seen examples of this with my own eyes and it amazed me why I didn't see more accidents while I was there.

Last statistics I read was about 10,000 accidents happen in Phuket each years - lots of them involved foreign tourists.

Also remember that - IT IS THAILAND, don't expect too much (if at all ) in terms of motor vehicle insurance. It's everyman for himself over there.

Your boyfriend might be lucky and nothing may happen. But you just don't know what is around the next corner.

Patong Bay Garden Resot is great value for money and is suitable for a couple looking for a very romantic place to stay or likewise its suitable for a family because of the nice pool and close proximity to the beach! also, good location for shopping and the night life on Bangla Road. Turn right out of the hotel and go down past Subway, there is a massage place that sits behind where you book tours. This place does the best foot massage, you'll find it because they are always busy.

The rooms are quite large and have a nice balcony, with more than half overlooking the pool or beach. The buffet breakfast was great and they had an amazing assortment of food to choose from including bacon, eggs, sausages and fresh fruit and danishes, plus heaps more! I just came back from Phuket last week and I stayed at the Best Western Phuke Ocean Resort. It was a 1 minute walk to Karon Beach(WAYYY nicer than Patong Beach-its a busy busy busy dirt hole) and its right beside a 7-11(trust me, comes in handy when u need a coke or something!), an ATM, a place to book any outings(like to Phi Phi) and its a 10 minute tuk tuk (dont pay over 200baht, if they say no then get the next one til 200baht is good). Taxi is good too but same rule goes with them. Or make them use the meter, it'll be about 20baht cheaper.

Dont buy anything off the beach(its NEVER a good deal like they make it out to be). In fact, try not to buy anyhting in Phuket. Its also 1/2 or 3/4 cheaper in Bangkok. I bought this purse for 150baht in Patong and i found the exact same purse in Bangkok for 40baht.

Patong at night is ALOT of fun!! Make sure to bring alot of $ with ya! Drinks are expensive but you're only there once so might as well make it a fun one right?? Try to stay at the bars on the side streets.

great room n great pool n just a km from patong beach.it faces kalim beach which is quite sparse unlike patong n it is near the bustle of patong too.ask any1 near rock city abt it.

Kata Beach is a much nicer beach than Patong and is only a 10min drive away. A tuk tuk will cost you 300TB. Try Kata Beach resort. Even if you end up staying in Patong I would still go to the beach at Kata as Patong Beach is not so nice

I'd also suggest Kata Beach since Patong is overloaded (beach,shops,clubs and agressive touts/taxi drivers) and too many "Ladies of the Night). From Kata you can easely visit also Karon or Nai Harn beach.

Patong Beach - Lots of Hotels and motels , shopping, resturants Pubs , Message houses all within 5-15 mins walking distance.

I would call Udon Thani more Isaan than Northern Thai as the cultures are quite different - but I would also say abt 50% cheaper as a guide - - last time there I had a very nice hotel for 1000 baht - and that is probably top of the line w/very decent places available for 500

Bangkok, Phuket are some of the major tourist areas in Thailand so accomadation costs tend to be higher, more expensive resturants around.

Rooms are about half the price in Bangkok. Food is probably about the same.

Can anyone tell me the best way to book a flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket?

I just flew in to Thailand and have no idea what Im doing. I took the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai yesterday and in 2 days I would like to go to Phuket.

I would prefer to fly there from Chiang Mai...I didnt really care for the train. Any recommendations?

Thai airways has daily direct flights from Chiang Mai (CNX) to Phuket (HKT). Total flight duration is only 1 hr and 55 mins.

You can book both of these airlines from their website at no extra charge. All you have to do is show identification when picking tickets up at airport a couple hours before departure. Bring your receipt just in case.

try one of the following, go into an agent ask about prices for flights direct from chiang mai to phuket, you may have to go via Bangkok! however i think you will find Bangkok airways may fly direct and or Thai, you can also ask about air Asia and one two fly these are the budget airlines, ask about any promotions at the time you wish to fly, an alternative is catch a VIP bus, from Bangkok to phuket is about 1200 baht to 1600 baht i think? the 24 seater is good with big seats ! only thing with the bus is its about 12 hours! prices by air can vary unless you are on a strict timetable just buy one way tickets as you need them the price of return is usually not committing yourself if you have a change of plan!

any travel agent in CM can book this flight for you - - easy as pie.. you should have come north from Bkk on a bus, they have first class buses that are very nice.. hey, if you just arrived, take a day off and relax a little - get out from under the jet lag etc.. before you go racing all over the place.. chill out - have a nice meal and a good nights sleep.. You have options to fly from Chiangmai to Phuket. Either direct flight with Thai Airways or fly through Bangkok. Direct flight cost you about 5,200bahts, flight time about 2 hours.

Are there any theme parks in singapore or phuket? If so what are they called?

There are theme parks located on Sentosa Island. There is the Surrender Chamber showcasing the fall of Singapore during WW2. There is the Butterfly Park, Underwater World, etc In the future, there will be much more as Universal Studio will be in town then, 5 years later, hopefully.

As for Phuket, there are a number of theme parks too. There is Fantasea Phuket with French style moulin rouge dancing Thai style, Simon Cabaret, Seashell Museum, and others. You can check http://www.tourismthailand.org for details.

The Escape Theme Park and Wild Wild Wet are situated side by side in NTUC Downtown East, Pasir Ris, Singapore.

The Escape theme park will offer thrill and kiddy rides. Wild Wild Wet is a water theme park (Watch out for that bikini!)

Bali is amazing. I would denfentility go there. Phuket is so overrated

Bali's got culture, that's for sure.

Your timing is relevant because of the weather.

Bali's weather is at its best now until say September. Phuket's weather is best Dec - March. The periods in the middle are changeable.

Architecturally Bali is far and away the best. If you propose stopping in Bangkok on the way to Phuket then that would slightly change things.

I like both places but they each have different strengths.

Phuket has its charm that you cannot find in Bali. There are a number of island resorts where you can stay with plenty of privacy. And great surroundings too. Options to head to Phang=nga or Krabi from Phuket, all by boat, and you have more beach and island resorts to try and explore. You just cannot do island hoping in Bali.

Phuket ( POO-KET) is unfortunately overdeveloped and no longer a hidden secret.

Based on the pictures, I think Bali might be more romantic and more interesting architecturally.

In general Thais are very nice though and Thai food is the best.

I am not sure I will feel 100% safe in Bali from previous history with terrorists and bombing. It might be OK now, however.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Bali, hands down.... Phuket is party place and many people around. Not the best place for honeymoon.

There are big touristy places in Bali, but they are many quiet towns for some romance. It has plenty of culture and one of my favourite places I visited when I was in Asia.

Phuket for a honeymoon...are you looking to have a threesome?

If so then it would be a good place to go, otherwise forget it. If you like Thai food and architecture spend a few days in Bangkok seeing the temple etc, and then fly to Koh Samui and relax on the beach or the other way around. If you decide on Bali book into one of the nicer hotels in Nusa Dua, 5 star hotels there are very cheap but you wont find anywhere near as much architecture to see there, its more of a resort area.

The cheapest is Bus, there is no train that goes to Phuket you would need to take a train and then a bus, so it wouldn't be cheapest. Flying on discount airlines like air asia is the best option. It takes a little over an hour to fly to Phuket.

The cheapest and (by far) most uncomfortable way is by bus.Next would be the train. Airplane tickets have come down quite a bit since the appearance of budget airlines, so why don't you take a plane?

if there is a couple of you then why not get a quote from a private taxi? I also believe you can get plane tickets for as cheap as Â£30 each way on AirAsia. Worth a look but i'd prob go with the bus.

It costs about $120AUD return from Bangkok to Phuket you would be crazy to catch the bus. Both of the airports are relatively close to the cities

I have plan to go to Phuket, Thailand at the end of this year. I also found many interested hotel in Phuket but difficult to choose which one is the best for my budget. My budget is around $60 - $80 per night and I prefer to stay in Patong beach.

Last time when I booked my hotel in Phuket Thailand, I made my booking from http://www.hotelphuketthailand.net , This website provides a great discount rate for most hotel in Phuket. I stayed in Centara Villas Karon for 2 nights at pool villas It was a good hotel and good service. I would recommend this hotel to you.

However this hotel is on the hill not the beach (between patong and Karon). You can see the sea view from your room but you can't swim in the sea. It's ok for me because my villa has a pool inside. Also hotel has a nice swiming pool for every guest as well.

Try Wotif.com, ther are last minute prices so will only show prices for a month or so, but that at least gives you an idea of the hotels around and info. Then you could contact them directly for prices for the end of the year, i'sd say it would be cheaper at the end of the year.

I will be traveling to phuket along with 5 other friends in about 2 weeks. We will be staying to 3 months and we have been looking for some budget accommodation. I've looked online a lot and found a few things, but nothing really great. We are looking to spend alltogether no more than 30000 baht a month for the 6 of us on a place to stay.If anyone could help us out with some places to look it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

yr better off going there and finding somewhere at the moment there are lots of empty places to stay with prices very cheap....i stayed in a twin room with double beds,fridge,a/c with nice shower room 5 mins from bangla road for 300bht per night abt Â£5 but i had to haggle from 500bht so its worth doing it when u get there to get a bargain.

We specially recommend the rooms with pool access. That is pure luxury! Relatively cheap and great value for the money. I stay in 4 and 5 star hotels all over the world and from my perspective, this hotel was surprisingly good in every way! Great resturants next door and Massage. Fresh fruit cart on the corner.

Phuket at the moment is VERY cheap. You've picked a good time to go. Prices jump quite a bit in November through to early March or so.

It would be better if you have been there yourself. We have a 2 yo and 4 yo. How safe are the Phuket beaches after the tsunami? Are there any concerns which we shud be aware of when travelling with the kids there? Thanks

Most hotels in Thailand are child friendly and do have rooms where you can all be in together. Some even offer a baby sitting service should you want to go out on your own one evening, maybe to see a "Simon Phuket" show [lady boys]

The beaches are good as these have been cleaned since the disaster. The only concern I'd have for the children is the food. Thai food is very hot and spicey, so go to restaurants where they cater for tourist.

Take the children on a tour around the island, there are places where they can ride on elephants and have their photos taken with hawks on their arms/shoulders.

The scenery is stunning, the shopping good and the people are lovely.

JW Marriott is great for kids, but is not the cheapest option.

Actually Thai people love children and they adore western children, if they are blond they just get crazy about them. So no need to look for a children friendly hotel, all of them are, you would never get any complains about your children.

About the safety you have to take care yourself as thai people do not really understand and smile about our children's safety precautions.

Don't worry your children will love it.

We have had hundreds of western people with small children here and all of them came back especially bc of the childrens freedom here.

I am planning a vacation in Bangkok & Phuket for first time in Jan-07 How can i get a female company to stay with me and guide me to explore these two cities for 10 days. any other suggestion to plan my trip better.

If you are looking for western female company, you can stay around Kao San road in BKK, and meet many. If you have skills you can find a girl. If it is a Thai girl you want...A good girl can't just take off from work or school and go with you. A farang stranger. She will lose face and respect as is their way.

Now a lower class girl you meet around the bars will jump on you. Most will be at your wallet so don't sleep. The rest are simple and want a better life and are sweet but basically you will be taking advantage of her. If she goes off with a strange foreigner she loses all respect from her community which is why the working girls WILL go with you. They have nothing to lose.

That said the majority of the women are sweet and honest but in any place in the world if you are looking to pimp out someone..you may get pimped out yourself big boy.

According to some advice you've received, I'd like to advise you not to believe every message. Those places like Patpong or Sukumvit areas're for those guys who come to enjoy night life. I'm not sure we've such a service from the government agency, that is, TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand). Please visit its website for details and related information. However, you may contact some private tour agencies from the hotel you'd stay in Bangkok and ask them if they can help you.
